growing up overseas, our source of news was a Zenith Transoceanic shortwave radio (immensely heavy loaded with nine D cells) – I was too young to understand the news programs, but hearing «This is London.» followed by «Lilliburlero» and the time synchronization pips was an iconic part of my childhood – the Zenith stayed with us and, as I grew, I learned how to tune in other stations and use the timezone dial – and then sending in letters to the stations and weeks (or months) later, getting QSL cards mailed back to add to my collection
