in Ken MacLeod’s Fall Revolution series, in response the rise of artificial intelligence, mankind develops a variant of purely mechanical nano-machines, ie. computers that can’t be hacked by the machine intelligences

in reaction to Trump’s recent announcement of the Stargate Project, massive funding to create data centers to churn out AI slop, I was thinking about something as purely speculative as Ken MacLeod’s nano-Babbages inspired (in part) by vague memories of articles about Atari’s Transputer – we have relatively large communities of makers and hackers playing around with retro-computing, small web, and alternative architectures – «what if» someone created small, modular 8-bit computers – computers that could be plugged into each other to create clusters capable of handling higher-order tasks (ex. cluster of 8 could handle 32-bit computing)
