another programming shibboleth leftover from C I’ve run across is using “character” as a synonym for “byte” – Unicode has been out for over 30 years now but even some new programming languages still fall back on this archaism – back during early lockdown, I stumbled across Tomasz Wegrzanowski’s 100 Languages Speedrun where he uses a couple quick Unicode tests when evaluating each langauge

• “hello” is 5 characters
• “hello” is 5 bytes
• “Żółw” is 4 characters
• “Żółw” is 7 bytes
• uppercase “Żółw” is “ŻÓŁW”
• “🍰” is 1 character
• “🍰” is 4 bytes
