most of our knowledge of ternary is based on the work On Three-valued Logic (1920) by Jan Łukasiewicz – Jan Łukasiewicz also invented Polish notation – a parentheses-free prefix notation
“balanced ternary” was chosen for Setun – [–1, 0, +1] or [–0+] – “balanced around zero” – the most significant (non-zero) trit also indicates whether the whole number is positive or negative (no need for a separate sign bit or two’s complement) – and rounding is easier, just zero out anything after the decimal
