paying attention to a minor niggle when updating my system – and it’s just that, «update» –
Debian and Alpine have separated the terms update and upgrade –
update is to retrieve all the information, upgrade is to apply that information –
and this is where the niggle comes in, Flatpak uses update when they mean upgrade
and this can’t even be explained by parallel evolution, Flatpak is the young upstart in this scenario –
an example of parallel evolution would be console versus GUI mail clients (although, again,
the GUI versions are significantly younger) – GUI (and web) use the more familiar server
and client terminology, whereas their predecessors still hold on to the agent
terminology (transport agent, user agent, delivery agent, submission agent, retrieval agent)
