one of the things I regularly run into with Linux and FOSS is that while there is a lot of «how to», there is often very little «why» – it’s generally assumed you already know why you picked a piece of software, you only need to know how to set it up and use it
personally ran into this looking into aerc – console email programs have followed
a separate evolutionary path from GUI/web apps with what appears to be a balkanization of function –
aerc can be installed as standalone, Arch wiki recommends adding khard –
Alpine wiki talks about setting up msmtp and mbsync –
and Bence Ferdinandy has a write-up using all the separate components –
but none of them explain why I would want to use one component over another –
why choose mbsync over aerc’s built-in functions?
