everyone has a particular programming language that attracts them – I’ve touched a whole passel of languages but, since it’s never been job related, I’ve never stuck with anything – I like the non-infix languages (like Lisps and Forths), but none of the Lisps come across as being particularly lightweight and Forths have always appeared as an exception – and then there’s the convenience of languages that come pre-installed on your system like Shell, Perl, and Python

several years back, I came across Lua when doing addons for World of Warcraft – Lua is lightweight, both in size (a tiny single binary) and functionality (22-ish reserved words) – it has the flexibility of Lisps (and the designers were inspired by Lisp) – it has a huge installed base, serving as the scripting language for several big name games as well as for Neovim – and, to date, it has yet to suffer from a BDFL with «problematic» opinions
