with the recent brouhaha over the «renaming» of the Gulf of Mexico, I came up with a simple metric to help define usage of «Gulf of America» – the whole region remains Gulf of Mexico – the specific parts covered by crude oil slicks (ie. anywhere oil companies have splooged) is Gulf of America – the hypoxic dead zone off the coast of Louisiana is Gulf of America – the west coast of Florida affected by red tides is Gulf of America – as an added bonus, the east coast of Florida with flesh-eating bacteria carried in on seaweed can also be Gulf of America
