within note-taking and personal knowledge management (PKM) communities, there are two primary strands – atomic notes versus one big text file (OBTF) – whether to keep each thought in its own file or collect everything together – OBTF is easier to search through, atomic notes are easier to organize (folders, links, tags) – but one side aspect of this is syncing, version tracking, and backups – OBTF is easier to backup (only one file), but it is also a single point of failure – if it gets corrupted, that’s everything – whereas with atomic notes, if one file gets corrupted, it’s only one small part
