along with re-organizing my aliases, functions, and scripts, I should probably look into improving the scripts themselves – and it’s certainly easy to find whole essays on «scripting best practices»

• use descriptive names and comments
• add set -eu at beginning of script for basic error handling
• use exit codes (exit 1)
• keep scripts portable, just use #!/bin/sh
• use fuctions to organize code
• quote variables (cp "$file" "$destination")
• use printf over echo
• avoid using eval
• add .sh extension
• redirect errors to STDERR
