while I’m whinging about quotations and citations, you’re also not supposed to
use the <q> tag for scare quotes, you’re just supposed to
embed the quote marks directly – scare quotes have become a shortcut for starting
a phrase with some equivalent of so-called
– according to Wikipedia, the
actual term scare quotes goes back to 1956, but marks used to indicate
irony or dubiousness goes back to Ancient Greece where they used diple
periestigmene (a dotted greater-than sign, those >:hipsters) – and now
Slate is claiming that hashtags are the new scare quotes, #YOLO
