many years ago, Linus Åkesson posted some arguments against using syntax highlighting for programming – they did carve out a couple exceptions to their position: comments and differentiating between similar looking constructs like C’s = and == – I can’t comment on highlighting for programming languages (although I do agree the rainbow soup result leaves something to be desired) – but I could see a basic highlighting for markup languages could be useful, something drastically simplified from what current implementations try to show off – I could see using three levels: comments, markup, and content – comments get dimmed out, all markup gets highlighted in one color, and content is left at default
