recently saw a comment “bikes are for kids and DUIs” which sums up the stigma of bicycles in the US – bikes fall into roughly three categories, those too young to drive a car, those who’ve lost their access to driving a car, and athletes who use bikes within the confines of a sport – mountain bikes, gravel bikes, and bike messengers get ranked with kids on skateboards – road bikes, commuter bikes, and cruiser bikes are for those who’ve had their driver’s license revoked or hippies blathering about health – and because we see cyclists as those not worthy of driving a car, we can’t see them as victims of accidents, the victim is the privileged driver whose car got scratched
