while Pascal didn’t appear until a decade after COBOL, they’re both considered of an age – but while Pascal devs more often recount fond memories, COBOL devs seem to gravitate more towards “war stories” – COBOL was aimed towards businesses and stayed with them as they became enterprises (most notably, financial institutions) – meaning COBOL devs had a whole corporate infrastructure sitting over their heads while working in high-stakes environments – whereas Pascal was designed to be a “teaching language” and got its start in the microcomputer market, generally managing to avoid the high pressure domains where COBOL held sway
