as graphics started gaining popularity, DRI developed a graphics abstraction layer, GSX, that would run on CP/M and MS-DOS – 16-bit GSX went on to became the core of the GEM desktop environment – GEM went through multiple iterations, eventually being ported to the Motorola 68000 as GEMDOS with Atari being given full rights – and thus, Atari TOS powering Atari ST computers
along the way, Lee Lorenzen and a couple other employees left DRI to found Ventura Software, creator of Ventura Publisher (Ventura Publisher used GEM for its GUI) – Ventura Publisher got distributed worldwide by Xerox before being bought by Corel and surviving as Corel Ventura, holding its own against the likes of FrameMaker, QuarkXPress, and InDesign
