I keep forgetting how influential Silicon Valley was to the rise of microcomputers – and a lot of that can generally be traced back to at least two companies, Digital Research (DRI) and Xerox PARC
Gary Kildall created CP/M for 8080 and Z80 microcomputers – CP/M begets MP/M, CP/M-86, MP/M-86, and Concurrent CP/M – Seattle Computer Products (SCP) releases 86-DOS (QDOS) which shared commands with OS/8 and CP/M and had an API that “was very similar” to CP/M – Microsoft purchased a license for 86-DOS and proceeded to develop MS-DOS and licensed MS-DOS to IBM as PC DOS – and finally, DRI releases DR DOS in an attempt to regain the market
