revisiting some previous speculation – what if, back in the 8-bit era, we had focused more on parellelism rather than “more power”? – instead of the urge to follow the 8-bit to 16-bit to 32-bit path, we had decided to focus on the communication between CPUs, more CPUs insted of wider data paths? – at the time, peripherals (floppy drives, printers, etc.) already had their own fully capable CPUs inside – our knowledge of faster chips, smaller dies, faster buses, and caching applied to highly-parallel 8-bit architectures rather than just abandoning 8-bit when we moved to 16-bit, abandoning 16-bit when we moved to 32-bit …
