second to southeast Asia, I like some of the north African and Saharan cultures – the food, music, art, and architecture coming out of that part of the world all shows the impact of living in desert environments, with Mali famous for its “desert blues” – what I don’t like as much is the societies – all of them are heavily influenced by Islam and show extreme separation (and inequality) between genders (Mali ranking 157 out of 160 for gender inequality) – the men go out to tea shops and chat amongst themselves – the women visit each other’s houses and chat amongst themselves – but there’s no co-ed chatter and banter, no mixed third spaces for the two to get to know each other
