I had previously commented that Lua is the BASIC of the modern world, and, given my recent distractions, this is now leading me to wondering what is the Pascal of the modern world? – what is the compiled language of choice for hobbyist and home programmers? – and I think it might just be plain old C – C started off as the big serious language behind Unix – but then all the “real programmers” moved on to C++ and Java and Rust and Go, leaving C behind to be claimed by the hobby programmers fiddling around with microcontrollers and SOCs and Arduinos and STM32s and ESP32s and home automation and LoRa mesh networks
