internet radio showed up first but its popularity never really took off – and it was soon overshadowed by the early streaming services – internet radio relied both on players that understood Shoutcast or Icecast streams (hint: most of them did) and then copy-pasting the links into your player – but while most players understood Shoutcast, you often needed separate players if the station was serving up RealAudio or WMA or AAC streams – but with the streaming services taking off, everything was handled through a web player – standalone audio players were no longer necessary
