there have been a couple articles recently pointing out that open source is in a really odd place (xkcd 2347 is getting reposted a lot) – most big software projects (including a lot of corporate software projects) rely, at some point, on open source dependencies – but those dependencies are, more often than not, being developed as hobby projects by hobbyist maintainers – and yet corporations refuse to see them as anything other than free labor, more than happy to file bug reports without patches, overload issues with LLM slop reports, and all while actively not donating anything helpful or meaningful – constantly taking, never giving
