a lot of the hobbyist keyboards have standardized around the ProMicro (or at least, the ProMicro footprint) – originally an Atmel ATmega32U4 development board with a micro-USB connector, updates have included the switch to a USB-C connector as well as swapping the CPU for a Raspberry Pi RP2040 – and while there are other development boards with the RP2040, the simplicity of the ProMicro footprint seems to be here to stay – with some ingenuity, you can make a two-key keyboard within the same size footprint
