a while back, ChickenThoughts posted a comic making fun of pigeon nest-making abilities – combine that with getting glimpses of the pigeons nesting around here during late winter, it reminds me of one stupid theory of mine – I had heard some story somewhere that the majority of pigeons in North America are descended from a type of domesticated pigeon called a rock dove that had been brought over from Europe as yet another form of livestock – ie. they’re feral, not wild

unlike the other birds around here, the pigeons seem more just mildly wary of humans rather than downright avoiding humans – they certainly seem more inclined to build their nests closer to human habitation rather than further away in more protected areas – which finally circles back to my theory – between domestication and providing dovecotes, do the feral populations still have some sort of «memory» of being safer near humans?
