when building mechanical keyboards, one of the main components are small diodes (1N4148) – these come in a variety of sizes (or «packages») – SOD-323 are too tiny to be handled comfortably – SOD-123 is the most common surface mount and can be done by hand with a magnifier and tweezers – these will have a small stripe (printed or engraved) on the cathode end allowing you to get things aligned correctly – and then through-hole are the easiest to work with – these look like small glass beads fused to a wire – and the cathode end is marked with a black stripe on the glass – using up old stock, I found a batch leftover from some project where the marking was a beige stripe – REALLY annoying to work with, lighting needs to be perfect in order to see the stripe
