as an outsider, Finns have some distinctive flavors that started out as medicinal and ended up as candies and treats – licorice, sal ammoniac, pine tar, and xylitol – licorice is the base and xylitol is the sweetener – Finland’s most famous combination is adding in the sal ammoniac giving us salmiakki (salty licorice) in a multitude of shapes and strengths (up to and including hard candies with a center of pure sal ammnoniac) – but sitting in the wings, don’t forget about Terva Leijona (pine tar licorice) – of course, Wikipedia references Leaf also producing Villi Pohjola with some more interesting flavor combinations but I haven’t had any luck finding them (at least outside of Finland)
