I would like to see a revival of the position of «memento mori» – but instead of a slave whispering into Caesar’s ear, a public and vocal commentary ridiculing the current ruler’s actions – a constant reminder to the ruler they only rule at the whim of the people – a protected political role, a position untouchable by those in power and answerable only to the people – chosen from comedians and opposition (in the US, it would have to be someone other than the Democrats, they are sycophants not opposition) – always present at any appearance of the ruler, willing to insult, belittle, interrupt, and denigrate
