with the popularity of vintage and retro computing (as well as dumb phones and permacomputing), we’re going to end up with even more devices that really shouldn’t be interacting with the cesspool of Web 3.0 – but we’ve also seen the rise of the PiHole, dedicated firewall appliances, and ESP32 devices doing anything and everything – I am rather surprised we haven’t seen (or there hasn’t been more visibility of) gatekeeper appliances – standalone devices that can handle a combination of encryption computing (generating keys, SSH, TLS) for systems without the computing power, firewall filtering and adblocking for pre-Web systems – something with a DB-9 port on one end, Wi-Fi on the other, and an embedded browser with uBlock Origin (it takes in HTTPS pages and spits out BBS pages) – configuration from the DB-9 end only
