when placing book titles on the spines of books, there are two dominant styles (at least within the western world) – reading from top to bottom (ex. English) and reading from bottom to top (ex. Finnish, French) – when lined up on a shelf or in a bookcase, it’s just a matter of convention whether you tilt your head to the right or the left when reading the titles – the one place where the style makes a difference is if the books are stacked on a table (ex. coffee table books) – spine titles read from top-to-bottom when laid flat read upright – spine titles read from bottom-to-top when laid flat read upside down
