not too long ago, Apple luminary Bill Atkinson passed away – one of the things he is most known for is “Atkinson dithering”, a variation of error diffusion dithering (ex. Floyd-Steinberg) that requires somewhat less processing power and produces slightly more contrasty results that read better on low resolution (at least by our standards) systems – while ImageMagick doesn’t include an Atkinson dither option, it can be pretty decently faked
