watching Roaming Wild Rosie work on her cabin in Sweden mentioning one item and then A Boat in the Woods also mentions the same thing – tar oil, a mix of linseed oil and pine tar (and sometimes turpentine) – it can be mixed together in various consistencies all the way from a light amber to a dark molasses – and it’s primarily used for water-proofing wood, but it has all sorts of knock-on benefits (similar to Japanese yakisugi/shosugiban) including insect, fungi, and mold resistance in addition to being a general microbicidal

so why isn’t it used more often? – certainly more people have been rediscovering it as they start rejecting capitalism’s constant push for the new – but tar oil’s biggest drawback is that it is stupidly flammable – all fine and well if you’re living in an area still getting decent rainfall, but if you’re living in wildfire regions like California or Mediterranean, it’s definitely a “no go”
