my initial forays into Linux weren’t all that successful – from the various magazines at the time, I’d managed to get hold of install CDs for Debian and SUSE as well as grabbing a leftover PC – and had absolutely no luck getting either to install – hunting around for another distro to try out and stumbled across Gentoo and the idea of a “source based distro” not only sounded great but felt like the “proper” way to do Linux – with a Stage 1 CD and the Gentoo Handbook in a second TTY, I breezed through the install process (well, aside from waiting on all the compiling going on) – to this day, I still have no idea why I had an easier time installing Gentoo Stage 1 over user-friendlier distros
