I’m as much an altoholic with programming languages as I am with my gaming characters – which means I have many versions of “Hello, World!” sitting around – for scripting languages, I like to look at the size of the interpreter (Lua pretty much always wins here – Perl and Python may be smaller but both pull in whole ecosystems)
for compiled languages, I look at the equally meaningless metric of the size of the compiled binary – with C binaries (15K to 20K) as the baseline, Chicken Scheme (20K), Pascal (30K), and Ada (35K) are competitive – Austral (60K) and Hare (120K) hold the middle ground – but then there’s Crystal: regular build sits at 2.3M with an optimized and stripped build at 470K …
