microcontrollers generally use Harvard architectures (separating instructions and data) – early microcomputers often came with DOS or BASIC burned to ROM with user programs and data on floppy disks – BSDs usually separate packaging between base (system) and ports (user) – microkernel architectures aim for small kernels by moving features into userspace – a lot of portable consumer electronics are set up with firmware in flash and user files on SD cards – it looks like we should be revisiting this idea of going back to separating system and user and making it harder for outside forces to interact with system
