with all the stories of LLM data centers sucking our already failing energy infrastructures dry, aside from LLMs, how much computing power do we really need? – the two obvious areas that need decent computing resources are video decoding and cryptography – but word processing and spreadsheets started out on 8-bit systems (and some authors still refuse to give up their 8-bit word processors) – GUIs started showing up at the end of the 8-bit era and took off with the start of the 16-bit era – desktop publishing was one of the hallmarks of the 16-bit era – video games will always take advantage of every resource available – and yet the classics, built under constrained systems, still have huge and loyal fanbases
