evening on Khwae Yai, Kanchanaburi, Thailand
Linux was inspired by Unix and, as it grew, it adapted a lot of the conventions
of Unix – but at the same time, there’s also been a lot of divergence between
the two – more people are familiar with the BSDs than pure UNIX – and the Linux
side has pretty much settled on systemd and GNU utils – but at the same time, a
few smaller distros are adapting BSD-isms to one degree or another – the package
managers for Gentoo, Void, and Alpine have more in common with the BSD side than
the standards of apt
and dnf
– in a search to save
space, several distros have chosen BusyBox over GNU utils – and now we have the
rise of Chimera Linux taking this trend to the next step, replacing even larger
swaths of the OS either with BSD equivalents (or at least, non-Linux
equivalents)
