a few days back, cms wrote an article on people talking about the decline of Perl – and his interpretations parallel my opinions on the divide between mainframe culture and microcomputer culture – although the two paths have clearly started to merge (as microcomputers and smartphones have become far more powerful), there still exists foundational differences – you don’t get the level of gatekeeping in BASIC or Lua that you get in Perl or Haskell – the one exception, I think, is C which has become ubiquitous on both sides of the divide (and has certainly supplanted Pascal on the microcomputer side)
