yesterday, I mentioned C being one of the languages that bridged the divide between mainframe and microcomputer culture – developed on mainframes but quickly ported to a myriad of architectures – while it was a high-level language, its peers saw it as no better than assembly – its culture was more focused on practical implementation rather than protecting their territory – and with a profusion of descendents (C++, Objective-C, C#, Swift, Go, Rust, etc.) all getting lumped together despite each trying to form their own cultures
