Wikipedia mentions according to a 2024 survey, up to 13.8% of homes in Japan are abandoned (akiya) – with an aging and declining population, the vacancy rates are only going to get more severe – both younger generations and westerners are showing renewed interest in renovations, but acquiring an akiya is a task in and of itself – property owners are not required to register ownership (nor transfer of ownership) – when there is no seller, there is no way to be a buyer

there are some additional cases where even if an owner is found, they don’t want to sell even if the building is abandoned or vacant – while the house might not be their home, it is home to the family’s shrine or the family’s ancestral altar or the family’s graves – and so, twice a year, they’ll still make a pilgrimage back to the old home as long as they’re able
