one of those little things that stand out watching some of the Japanese channels – the regular, casual, and frequent use of this thing called “newspaper” – lining the floor under tatami, wrapping vegetables, laying out on the kitchen floor before dragging out the pickling barrel – I’m old enough to remember grabbing the comics section as soon as it arrived – but it seems pretty clear that Japanese papers didn’t follow the enshittification path that US newspapers so eagerly jumped on to – advertising taking priority, sidelining the news, and refusal to adopt online – now US newspapers are online only, still advertising dominant, praying for subscribers, and incapable of turning out a print edition
