yesterday, one of the retrocomputig posters on Mastodon ran up against Wirth’s Law, dealing with cursor lag on a text menu on a modern “smart” TV – old microcomputers were pretty much “instant on”, your biggest wait was the whirr-chu-kunk-chu-kunk of the floppy drive – C64 games that had to load large amounts of data at least resorted to loading screens (Ocean Loader being famous) – there were urban legends out of Apple that Jobs would tolerate slow programs but would absolutely not tolerate slow mouse or keyboard (did he have to deal with the lag and the 15 character buffer on IBM PCs?) – and now we have to put up with web pages with loading screens …
