following the rabbit hole of Shoyan Japanese Carpenter to Japanese house renovations to akiya renovations – the abandoned homes are more likely to be traditional designs – seeing renovators going in and peeling back the layers of wallpaper and wood paneling and linoleum flooring to reveal beautiful giant timber framing – the US almost completely switched over to 2×4 framing and drywall after WWII whereas Japan still has retained their love of wood and woodwork – although it does come as a bit of a gut-punch to then see renovators cover up the gorgeous timber-work with drywall
