the Commodore 64 had three main graphics “modes” – text mode was probably the most famous, a 40×25 character grid, each block being 8×8 pixels with access to the PETSCII character set and two (of the sixteen) colors for each block

next up was HiRes mode, 320×200 pixels with 16 colors – but with, by today’s standards, fairly severe memory limitations – without an REU (RAM Expansion Unit), each 8×8 cell was limited to two colors

which meant colorful graphics were usually done in MultiColor mode – MultiColor was 160×200 pixels with 16 colors – but each pixel was double width and each 4×8 cell was limited to four colors
